Historical Days

Company A
Company A’s Tier ONE Event!
(Fireman’s Park)

As in years past, this is an invitation only event.  Enclosed is the current schedule, general event rules, pre-registration form, map, and release form.   Each pre-registered infantrymen will receive a four dollar bounty if we receive your pre-registration by the 28th of June.  This way we can keep any walk on’s to a bare minimum.  If your unit would like to save time at the registration tent, please photocopy the release form and have each participant fill one out.  Usual amenities will be available to all registered reenactors.

We have made a few new wrinkles to event for 1999.  The battle scenario for this year is the Skirmish at Beaver Dam Station, Virginia - August 5-6, 1862.  This was an reconnaissance mission under the orders of Major General John Pope.  The purpose of this mission was to destroy the Confederate’s communication line on the Virginia Central Railroad.  Several skirmishes broke out during this raid, with casualties on both sides.  In fact, on the August 6th skirmish, 17 sick and footsore men of Second Wisconsin were captured by the Confederates.  Our impression should consist of: Frock or Sack Coats, Dark Blue or Sky Blue Trowsers, Hardee Hat’s without Corps Badges, and usual accouterments. Leggings and Knapsacks are optional.

The Fox Lake Historical Days Committee is hosting additional activities for the weekend including:  tours of historic homes in Fox Lake, tours of the train depot, a quilt show, antique show, an ice cream social hosted by the Fox Lake Historical Society, a tree dedication of an Gettysburg Sycamore tree (This tree is a seedling from a sycamore tree from Gettysburg, PA), tours of the Fox Lake Public Library’s Civil War Collection,  a Sunday morning non-denominal church service,  and much more.  Also on Saturday night, we will hold a Civil War Dance at the Legion Hall featuring a fine string band.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call at (414) 629-5433 or e-mail at garyklas@alexssa.net.  I hope to see you and the rest of Company K at Fox Lake.

I have the honor to be, your obedient servant,
Tom Klas

History of the Skirmish at Beaver Dam Station, Virginia
August 5-6, 1862

The battle scenario for this year is the Skirmish at Beaver Dam Station, Virginia - August 5-6, 1862.  This was an reconnaissance mission under the orders of Major General John Pope.  The purpose of this mission was to destroy the Confederate’s communication line on the Virginia Central Railroad.  At 2:00a.m. on August 5th, the Black Hat Brigade under General John Gibbon marched out from their camps in Falmouth and headed to Fredericksburg.  Once they marched past this quiet town, General Gibbon split the brigade up in the following manner:   the 2nd Wisconsin, 7th Wisconsin, 19th Indiana, and Battery B remained with General Gibbon and proceeded to march down the Telegraph Road towards Beaver Dam Station, while the 6th Wisconsin, a detachment of the Harris Light Cavalry, and a portion of the 1st New Hampshire Battery under Colonel Cutler headed southwest towards Frederick Hall Station.  Over the next two days, several skirmishes broke out during this expedition, with casualties on both sides.  The 2nd Wisconsin primarily skirmished with Confederate cavalry and infantry in the vicinity of Beaver Dam Station, enduring extremely hot weather.  In fact, on the August 6th skirmish, 17 sick and footsore men of Second Wisconsin were captured by the Confederates.  While Gibbon’s force kept the Confederates busy, the 6th Wisconsin and their pards continued to march towards Frederick Hall, reaching their destination on the morning of August 6th.  They took care of business by: cutting down the telegraph lines, burning corn and whiskey supplies belonging to the Confederates, destroying Frederick Hall Station, tearing up over two miles of the Virginia Central Railroad, and finally on burning down a railroad bridge on the Virginia Central Railroad.  Cutler’s force then marched two miles from Frederick Hall Station to camp for the night. On the morning of August 7th, the 2nd Wisconsin along with the 7th Wisconsin, 19th Indiana, and Battery B, covered the retreat of Cutler’s force from the Frederick’s Hall area.  Minor skirmishing once again took place while marching on the Orange Plank Road.  The 2nd Wisconsin withstood this fire, and later that evening, rejoined with their pards from the 6th Wisconsin.  Our impression should consist of: Frock or Sack Coats, Dark Blue or Sky Blue Trowsers, Hardee Hat’s without Corps Badges, and usual accouterments. Leggings and Knapsacks are optional.

I have the honor to be, your obedient servant,

Tom Klas
