Medical Case
Barbara B. Zabors, OTR, has shared the following
pictures of the medical case that belonged to her great-great grandfather, Benjamin E.
Yarnold, an Assistant Surgeon with Co. C of the 27th Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
He was born in England about 1817-1818 and emigrated to Canada (Ontario) in 1836 with
his father who had been an officer in the Royal Marines. He enrolled August 21, 1862 for 3
years, at age 44, at Houghton, Michigan as a physician. He was 5'7" tall,
had a fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair.
He was before Petersburg of the 20th of September, 1864 and was discharged from his
unit on September 26th to take up a commission given to him on September 13th. He mustered
out of service July 26, 1865 at Delaney House in Washington, D.C. and died somewhere in
the Detroit area in 1867 or '68, leaving a wife and 3 daughters.
The case is 24 1/4" wide, 12 1/2 " high and 13 1/2" deep
