Hi, More Equipment

All the items I advertised last week have been sold.  I do have a couple
other items from my personal inventory I wouldn't mind passing along:

1.  Hardee Hat.  $50.  Size 7 3/8 according to the label, but I think it's
may be a little tighter than that.  This was from Dave Skapple's kit, and one
of the premium quality Hardee Hats in the 1980s, I believe original cost was
over $80.00.  It's the equivalent of a XXXX Stetson.  The material is so
thick and stiff (without lacquer) that I think a small child could sit on the
crown without crushing it.  Almost fully dressed.  Nearly new, but Dave did
do a little "style" bending on the brim and top of the crown.  Rewetting and
blocking to either it's new shape, or your own style won't be a problem.
With proper care, this hat will probably last your lifetime, and the life
time of who ever you bequeath it to.

2.  Enfield Bayonet.  $50  This is a new, "de-farbed" reproduction bayonet
and scabbard I bought through E-Bay.  The seller I bought it from thought it
was an unissued original because all the India stampings were polished off,
British stampings were added, and the socket end was blued as the originals
were when issued new.   There is some blueing on the blade that will need to
be polished off, and while comes with a scabbard, there is no frog (the part
the sheath fits into that has a belt loop).  This is basically a new
de-farbed item, a price that's a hair better than what you'd pay for a new
run of the mill reproduction.

As with the other items, I'm letting the skirmish team have the first
opportunity to buy these items for the next week, then opening it up to
everyone.

Equipment For Sale

Gary Van Kauwenbergh

gvankauw@dor.state.wi.us

Hello All,

1. Last Friday, a reenactor who is getting out of the hobby sold me all his
equipment, except for his musket.  All of this equipment, except for the
Hardee hat and brogans are like-new.  The hat and shoes aren't bad, they
just don't qualify as like-new.

I have no desire to keep these items for any length of time, or lose money
selling them.  I am offering all these items exclusively to the 2d Wis
skirmish team for the next week, then to the entire ACWSA and 2d Wisconsin
reenactment group.  (Read: If you want them, don't be slow.)

All prices are half or less of the list price for similar items from a
recent Fall Creek Sultery catalog.

a. Frock Coat  $80:  At least size 42, doesn't look like it was ever
worn.
b. Sack Coat $32:  At least size 42, unlined, used but not abused.
  d. Pants $35:  Waist 30-32, and plenty long. sold with suspenders.
e. Gaiters $25: Made by Scott Wallick, early production using
lighter weight canvas.
f.  Hardee Hat $16: About size 7 1/2, Jarnigan, dressed - but the
feather needs to be cut down.
g. Ammo pouch/sling $25: Jaragin, with breastplate and box plate.
h. Canteen $20:  Jarnagin, bullseye style with camelhair clothe
cover.
i. Haversack $12: Looks new, with liner
j. Shirts $5 each:  three button pattern
k. Brogans $45:  Marked size 10, but may be a little smaller, pegged
with heel plates.
l.  Waistbelt $6:  With buckle, will probably fit waists up to 36
inches.
m. Cap pouch $16: I believe Jarnigan.

Other kibitz:

2.  Darlene and I bought a different pop-up camper last week, so we'll be
staying on site more than last year.

3.  I finally got around to getting the tools we decided to buy at the 2000
annual meeting.  With a budget of $81.12, we couldn't afford a complete set
of Snap-On quality tools, but I did get all the items we most use at the
range.  The club is officially has a $0.00 balance in the kitty.

Update of Cast includes now Jeff Daniels

Gods and Generals is the prequel to The Killer Angels, the novel upon which the film Gettysburg was based. Written by Jeff Shaara (son of Michael Shaara, author of The Killer Angels), Gods and Generals will soon be a major motion picture written and directed by Ron Maxwell. The movie will be filmed in and around Sharpsburg, Maryland, the site of the Antietam Battlefield, and on actual historic locations in Virginia and West Virginia.

[New!] Filming is scheduled for Summer-Fall 2001.[New!]

I'm still closer to ill than well, but am making slow progress everyday.
(Now I feel as though I may know what Robert E. Lee felt like at
Gettysburg--a hollow, painful emptiness in the chest [I *KNOW* that's
redundant, but that's how I feel].)
At least two MDs will now testify that I HAVE a heart.

Old Arkansas saying:  Getting well is slow as hell.
Old Hawaiian saying:  The mo' bettah you get, the slowah you get mo' bettah.

Many kind messages have been received, and I am trying, slowly, to answer
them all individually.  But I fall 'way behind.

One friend wrote:  At our age, getting sick can really get boring...we're
too old to whine and too young to act crotchety.

Wrong on both counts.

Thanks for your supportive thoughts and messages.
