Wisconsin filled the her old regiments with new volunteers which meant that even with many replacements there was always a core of veterans. This was a practice which General Sherman thought was a great strength in Wisconsin Regiments.
Twenty-five percent of the volunteers were born in Wisconsin the remainder came from places as far a way as the Sandwich Islands.
